SUMMARY
OF THE PROJECT
Project
environment:
Tortosa is the capital the region “Baix ebre”, administrative and
commercial centre of "Terres de l'Ebre", province of
Tarragona, in the South of Catalonia. This area has a rich historical
and natural heritage and two Natural parks: Parque Natural del Delta
del Ebro and the Parque Natural de los Puertos. Tortosa is a city of
approximately 46.000 inhabitants. Due to the importance of its
agriculture (citrus, mainly) it hosts many immigrants (25% from the
city), from about 110 nationalities. 27% of the population are young
people. The main economic activity in the region is service, followed
by agriculture and industry. Thus it is mainly a rural area where
European Youth information is not readily available and the
opportunity of taking part in this kind of projects is not very
common. As public transport service between villages is sparse, most
people use private transport.
Coordinating
organisation:
The coordinating organisation is obre’t’ebre, which was establish
by three European volunteers after a Future Capital. At present the
organisation counts on two workers, and about 10 volunteers who helps
obre't'ebre occasionally. obre´t´ebre is located in the Youth
Information Point of Tortosa, in the sports centre of the city. Since
its creation obre't'ebre has organised four international exchanges
and four summer work camps, supported and guided youth initiatives,
sent seven EVS volunteers, hosted four EVS volunteers and is hosting
a EVS volunteer from Turkey from september 2009 till june 2010, ....

Motivation
and EVS experience
At
the beginning of 2009 the PIJ (Youth Information Centre) showed a lot
of interest and motivation to host volunteers, as it provided youth
with the opportunity of discovering a new European reality in their
diversity and they may open to new environments, favouring fight
against racism and xenophobia, promoting interculturality and social
values such as tolerance, respect and solidarity. Hosting volunteers,
more innovating and creative projects are promoted.
One staff
member of the PIJ has received training about YiA and the EVS from
obre't'ebre They also had a meeting with the person responsible for
the EVS in Catalonia and people from obre't'ebre to solve
questions. It is planned to host 2 volunteers for 12 months each
(from August to August): one at the PIJ and the other one at the
library Marcel li Domingo. As coordinating organisation,
Obre't'Ebre will be in charge of the management of the project
(project description, application, management of funding, search of
accommodation, language classes, mentorship, evaluations, training
and final evaluation). obre't'ebre will also offer the staff of
l'IMACT the opportunity of participating in trainings about the
Programme, according to their possibilities. obre't'ebre intends
to plan the hosting of volunteers from different countries in new
hosting projects of the city at the same time so they can share a
flat and experiences and may support one another.
