GENERAL SELECTION CRITERIA OF THE VOLUNTEER

Volunteer profile:
The priorities of Grain Art, regarding the profile of the volunteers are for them a person:

  • Dynamic and motivated, with initiative and eager to learn,
  • Interested in social issues, human behaviour, human history and cultures,
  • Interested in living in a rural area,
  • With flexibility and ability to work individually and also in a team,
  • With assertive and empatic comunication habilities, 
  • Opened to know and meet persons from diferent origins, opened to the diversity.
  • A basic knowledge of Spanish would be needed in order to integrate rapidly to the community.
  • We will give preference to candidates who haven't had a previous experience abroad, but who have taken part in workshops or activities in centres for people in risk of social exclusion, and /or be active in the socio-art-cultural association world. We have no requirement regarding the age, gender or nationality of the volunteers.

SUMMARY OF THE PROJECT

Region: Tortosa is the capital of "Terres de l'Ebre", in the South of Catalonia, North-East of Spain. This area has a rich historical and natural heritage and two Natural parks: Parque Natural del Delta del Ebro and the Parque Natural de los Puertos. Tortosa is a city of approximately 40.000 inhabitants, 25% of whom are immigrants. One of the main economic activity in the region is agriculture, together with the service and industry. Thus it is mainly a rural area where European Youth information is not readily available and the opportunity of taking part in this kind of projects is not very common.

Coordinating organisation: The coordinating organisation is obre’t’ebre, which was establish by three European volunteers after a Future Capital. At present the organisation counts on two workers, and 6 to 10 volunteers who helps obre't'ebre occasionally. obre´t´ebre is located in the Youth Information Point of Tortosa, in the sports centre of the city. Since its creation obre't'ebre has organised four international exchanges and six summer work camps, sent seven EVS volunteers, hosted eight EVS volunteers and is actually coordinating an EVS project with 3 volunteers until September 2011. We also supported and guided youth initiatives, ....

Hosting Organisation: Grain Art is a non lucrative organisation working on promoting resources for the personal and social integration through the work and creativity.

The main aims of Grain Art are:

  • To encourage social and laboral inclusion to people with less opportunities
  • To give form and life to art and culture.
  • To actualize the heritage
  • To create resources for the education and to estimulate the creativity and communication.
We reach these objectives by working on education, formation, professionalism and creation of products and services.
The organisation has 4 transverse action lines which mix and complement each other:
  • Social and laboral inclusion
  • Education and formation
  • Social cohesion and imigration
  • Culture, heritage, art and creativity.
We organise these actions through the following activities:
  • Golden land: was a place for people with disabilities, working with silversmithing and woodcrafts. The organisation has been working with the project for the last three years.
  • Red Sky: occupational workshop of laboral insertion for people in risk of exclusion (illness, drug-dependents, social problematics, etc) working with papercrafts and cartoncraft. This is a permanent project, that moves the rest of the projects and activities.
  • Desert lights: It is a vocational training program for newcomers youngsters, mainly Berbers. This project is aimed to dinamize his own culture and to foster his social and laboral integration.
  • Footprints of sand and life: this is a ludic and educative workshop aimed at discovering and taking advantage of the signs of Berber writing “tifinac”, based in the language, the poetry and communication, involving different artistic techniques.
  • Growth pathways: this is an educative, ludic and didactic proposal to create experiences around the interculturality, the integration of people and the cohesion social. We are doing an educational programme for teachers, educators and mentors.
  • A world to share: this is an educative proposal working with ceramics, with its formal, symbolic and anthropological contents. The starting point is the Berber culture and the local culture. The arrival point is the universal culture.
  • Courses: different levels introductory courses of silversmithing and woodcrafts for youngsters with disabilities, inspired in the berber culture.
  • Heritage: different works, studies and collection of cultural heritage from the city of Tortosa or from Terres de l’Ebre area, for example the project “Medieval markets”
  • Services for organisations and companies.
  • The secrets of good life: talks about drugs prevention in educational centres of elementary and secondary education.
  • Milieu Plan: participation to the milieu plan run by Catalan Government in educational centres through workshops like “Footprints of sand and life”.
Project environment: Grain Art has an employment workshop to promote working insertion, next to the city centre. Working hours are from 8 pm to 14 pm, but activities in schools, organizations or in the library can take place in the afternoon. Depending on the needs, the volunteer will have access to the workshops out of his working timetable.

Board and lodging: The volunteer will be hosted in Tortosa, in a shared flat with local youngsters or other EVS volunteers. The volunteer has got to buy and cook its proper food.

Local transport: The distances between the lodging and the work place are shorts, so the volunteer can move by bike or by foot. In any case, if the volunteer needs to use public transport for the project activities, the transport costs will be refunded.

GENERAL TASKS OF THE VOLUNTEER

Trainings and suport:
The volunteer will receive the necessary information to carry out his/her activities, as well as about the structure of the hosting organisation.
Grain Art can offer to the volunteer training in woodcrafts, papercrafts and cartoncraft.
The volunteer will assist to Spanish and/or catalan classes every week, between one and three hours a week, depending on the availability of trainings and on the needs of the volunteer. He/she will be put in contact with youngsters in order to realize language exchange once a week.
The volunteer can assist to all the activities, talks and workshops organized in the schools by the hosting organisation, where he can learn pedagogy, technical knowledge, social and develop its personal competencies.
Through the relations with the organization staff, the volunteer can learn about the diferent cultures represented, about the reality of newcomers population and persons with disabilities or social problems, and about the laws, rules, costums and day-life of Spanish society.
One person from the staff of Grain Art will be the volunteer's work supervisor, with whom he/she will meet regularly to evaluate and plan its work.
The tutor of the EVS volunteer is a volunteer of obre't'ebre, who followed a special training from our National Agency. They will have regular meetings with the aim of evaluating the project and its conditions and to sole any conflict.

Tasks: The main purpose of the volunteers participation will be:

  • help and practice in paper craft, carton craft and wood craft artistic work: practices related to the product making process, from the origin of primary material to the final product
  • realize a cultural and social study,
  • make ceramic workshops in schools.
  • make theoretical study about product making process
  • prepare, organize, realize and evaluate of workshops, of educative material and studies or/and a personal project
  • reflexions and investigacions about the cultural and artistic heritage
  • study of the cultural and artistic products made by Grain Art until today
  • locate them in an historical context, deep it with the study of universal values
  • search for a practical sense in the actuality and educative applications
  • make new proposals of creations and designs of educative tools
  • practice art and interculturality in other organizations (schools, library, youth organizations, ...)

SERVICE TIME: about 30-35 hours per week, including technical and language and exchange

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY: holiday. Depending on the week there will be trips with young people or other volunteers to get to know the "Terres de l'Ebre” region

HOLIDAYS: Local and national holidays, and 2 free days a month with previous concertation agreement with the supervisor.

The volunteer can take part during his/her free time in any activities he/she is interested in: seminars, courses, local dances and music lessons, local activities...
