SUMMARY OF THE PROJECT

Region: Tortosa is the capital of "Tierras del Ebro", in the South of Catalonia. This area has a rich historical and natural heritage and two Natural parks: Parque Natural del Delta del Ebro and the Parque Natural de los Puertos. Tortosa is a city of approximately 46.000 inhabitants, 25% of whom are immigrants from Arab countries, Eastern European countries, Pakistan or South Sahara African countries, 27% of the population are young people. One of the main economic activity in the region is agriculture, together with the service and industry. Thus it is mainly a rural area where European Youth information is not readily available and the opportunity of taking part in this kind of projects is not very common. As public transport service between villages is sparse, most people use private transport.

Coordinating organisation: The coordinating organisation is obre’t’ebre, which was establish by three European volunteers after a Future Capital. At present the organisation counts on two workers, and 6 to 10 volunteers who helps obre't'ebre occasionally. obre´t´ebre is located in the Youth Information Point of Tortosa, in the sports centre of the city. Since its creation obre't'ebre has organised four international exchanges and four summer work camps, sent five EVS volunteers, hosted four EVS volunteers and is hosting a EVS volunteer from Turkey next September, supported and guided youth initiatives, .... More information on www.obretebre.org

Hosting Organisation: Grain Art is a non lucrative organisation working on promoting resources for the personal and social integration through the work and creativity.
The main aims of Grain Art are:
  • To encourage social and laboral inclusion to people with less opportunities
  • To give form and life to art and culture.
  • To actualize the heritage
  • To create resources for the education and to estimulate the creativity and communication.
We reach these objectives by working on education, formation, professionalism and creation of products and services.
The organisation has 4 transverse action lines which mix and complement each other:
  • Social and laboral inclusion
  • Education and formation
  • Social cohesion and imigration
  • Culture, heritage, art and creativity.
We organise these actions through the following activities:
  • Golden land: was a place for people with disabilities, working with silversmithing and woodcrafts. The organisation has been working with the project for the last three years.
  • Red Sky: occupational workshop of laboral insertion for people in risk of exclusion (illness, drug-dependents, social problematics, etc) working with papercrafts and cartoncraft. This is a permanent project, that moves the rest of the projects and activities.
  • Desert lights: It is a vocational training program for newcomers youngsters, mainly Berbers. This project is aimed to dinamize his own culture and to foster his social and laboral integration.
  • Footprints of sand and life: this is a ludic and educative workshop aimed at discovering and taking advantage of the signs of Berber writing “tifinac”, based in the language, the poetry and communication, involving different artistic techniques.
  • Growth pathways: this is an educative, ludic and didactic proposal to create experiences around the interculturality, the integration of people and the cohesion social. We are doing an educational programme for teachers, educators and mentors.
  • A world to share: this is an educative proposal working with ceramics, with its formal, symbolic and anthropological contents. The starting point is the Berber culture and the local culture. The arrival point is the universal culture.
  • Courses: different levels introductory courses of silversmithing and woodcrafts for youngsters with disabilities, inspired in the berber culture.
  • Heritage: different works, studies and collection of cultural heritage from the city of Tortosa or from Terres de l’Ebre area, for example the project “Medieval markets”
  • Services for organisations and companies.
  • The secrets of good life: talks about drugs prevention in educational centres of elementary and secondary education.
  • Milieu Plan: participation to the milieu plan run by Catalan Government in educational centres through workshops like “Footprints of sand and life”.
Project environment: Grain Art has an employment workshop to promote working insertion, next to the city centre. Working hours are from 8 pm to 14 pm, but depending on the needs, the volunteer will have access to the workshops out of his working timetable.

Board and lodging: The volunteer will be hosted in Tortosa or the nearest city Roquetes, in a shared flat with local youngsters or other EVS volunteers. The volunteer has got to buy and cook its proper food.

Local transport: The distances between the lodging and the work place are shorts, so the volunteer can move by bike or by foot. In any case, if the volunteer needs to use public transport for the project activities, the transport costs will be refunded.
