WORK CAMP - WORKING HOLIDAY
Aberdare, Wales - September 2007

Hi! Mi name is José. I am 20 years old and I have a wheelchair. From the 8th to the 23rd of September 2007, I participated, together with 11 other volunteers from Japan, South Korea, Austria, Sweden, Poland and France, in an international work camp in Aberdare (South Wales, one hour from Cardiff). How did it all begin? Then, a few years ago, I met Susana, one of the founders of the organization obre’t’ebre, who proposed that I realize a project of European voluntary (EVS). As I wasn’t confident enough to realise a project for such a long time, they proposed me to go on a work holiday, as “training”. During the work camp, we had to sculpt animals (each one different) in trees trunks that we would put in different places of the Natural Park of Aberdare, for the children to realize gymkhanas, discover the different animals of the Park and respect nature. We were staying in a very simple hotel, accessible and ideal to disconnect, surrounded by nature in the middle of the Natural Park. We worked from Monday to Friday, morning and afternoon, guided by an artist and two monitors. At night, we were playing or presenting all the countries represented. On week ends, we had excursions and visits organized in different fascinating places, like the villages of Cardiff Beach, Cardiff and its castle or the medieval castle of Caerphilly. A marvellous and unforgettable experience for personal growing, and of respect and comprehension of differences. I would like to thank Rut, Susana and Cecile, from obre’t’ebre and Katy from UNA Exchange, for making this possible. And for you who are reading, I invite you to participate to a work camp! There are always doubts and fears, but it’s worth taking risks!
