ENVIRONMENTAL WORKCAMP
Ebro Delta - August 2009

Press article published in the Magazine TotParc (September 2009), Diari de l'Ebre (27/08/09), La Marfanta (20/08/09), the Ràpita Magazine and the Amposta Magazine.

Our Delta suffers background problems like: regression, settlement of the deltaica platform, salinization, increase of the sea level, pollution, massive housing development... The associations
Jóvens per la Cultura i Sostenibilitat a les Terres de l’Ebre and obre't'ebre leaded a workcamp called "Preservation of the Bar of the Trabucador II", from the 2th till the 16th of August.

15 volunteers of the 4 Provinces of Catalonia worked cleaning the Bar of the Trabucador, work of which we have very proud, since the daily average has been of 20 industrial bags summing a total of 3000 Kg of garbage collected, picking up every kind of garbage, but we highlight and we denounce that the majority of garbage are human: plastic bottles, glass, napkins, papers, brics, boxes of fishing worms, ropes, nets, food rests...

We have camped in the Municipal Stadium of Poble Nou del Delta and we have enjoyed the services that the village have offered us. We thank its disposition and collaboration.

Besides we have carried out other tasks like the plantation of 104 trees and autochthonous plants in the gardens of Poble Nou del Delta with the intention of making aware the people that autochthonous plants consume less water, we thank the collaboration of the Town Council of Amposta; we have also cleaned 119 tamarix of the Llacuna del Clot in order to collaborate with the Natural Parc of Ebro Delta and to give shelter to the bats; in the Casa de Fusta we practice sustainable exchange, cleaning a footpath and transplanting waterplants from the lagune (yellow iris/Iris pseudacorus and bullrush/Typha sp.) in exchange for the loan of bicicles for all the participants during all the workcamp; in the Nature Reserve of Riet Vell of SEO/BirdLife we cut cigars of Bulrush (Typha sp.) as a manual method of prevention of weeds in the ecologic rice fields and we have visited the Deltàrium and the Ecomuseu to know the Natural habitats of the Delta.

The Bar of the Trabucador has been converted into a zone of picnic for the day, but during the 15 days that we have been cleaning it, we have noticed that it is as if it were a camping, but without having the services that a camping would loan, like showers, toilets, shadow zones, litter bins.... So people installed in the beach, or those who spend the day or the night leave the dirt there. It is necessary also to say that from of all these persons who use the Bar of the Trabucador as a camping, there are some that respect the environment, as they transmitted us, as another tasks of the volunteers was to make aware to the people of the situation of the Bar of the Trabucador.

Another subject that has surprised us a lot and for which we want to forbid the camping in the Bar of the Trabucador is the loss of vegetation, not only in the zones where there are not dunes, but also in the flat zones. The turists access as far as where they can arrive without danger of getting stuck in the sand and be able to be nearer the sea, but they do not notice that they are treading on the vegetation and that it will not grow again. Some of them think: "They are only weeds!!", but it's a big mistake. These plants, amongst others, European Marram Grass (Ammophila arenaria), Barilla Plant (Salsola soda), limoniums, reeds... they form a protective barrier that the sand and the dunes prevent to be eroded by the wind and the sea, so that the sea of inside and that of outside do not join and we can continue enjoying the beach of the Bar of the Trabucador in this way. For this motive from the Workcamp we carried out several performances for preserving the natural environment.

We profit to make a social call and ask to the people to be aware that the Bar of the Trabucador is one of the best beaches of Catalonia because in terms of habitat, since it is the only beach of the Catalan Coast that better preserve the vegetal community formerly quoted.

At the same time, we make a call to the Town Council to improve the services and regulate the lost control of the Bar of the Trabucador in an urgent way, instaling litter bins or delimiting the paths, the traffic and the parking of vehicles and we thank it for the budget that has been given us for carrying out the workcamp.

The workcamp has been carried out with the support of the Secretaria General de Joventut, the City Councils of Amposta (and Poble Nou del Delta) and Sant Carles de la Ràpita and with the collaboration of: the Agricultural school of Amposta, Soldebre, the Restaurant l'Estany-Casa de Fusta, the Nature Reserve of Riet Vell-SEO/BirdLife, the Deltarium, The Nature Parc of the Ebro Delta, Audouin Birding Tours, the Alberg L'Encanyissada one and Tourism and traditions Polet.
