ENVIRONMENTAL WORKCAMP
Ebro Delta - August 2008

From the 18th to the 31st of august, 20 volunteers, from 18 to 30 years old came from Rhône-Alpes (France), Italy, Baden-Würtenberg (Germany) and Catalonia to participate in an environmental workcamp, organized by obre’t’ebre and financed by the Obra Social Caixa Catalunya, the Secretaria de Joventut and the Program 4 Motors For Europe.

During the mornings, they have worked to conserve and restore different zones of the Ebro Delta. The technical work, advised by a monitor from SEO/BirdLife, has been quite varied: construction of visual fences in order to protect birds that nests in the Tancada Lagoon, cleaning of pools of the old fish farm in the Salines de la Tancada, management and transplantation of Tamarix sp, planted this spring in the lagoon of Aufacada, both protected areas of the Obra Social Caixa Catalunya; construction of bird nests, cutting of “cigars” (seeds of Typha) from the lagoon the Natural Reserve of Riet vell; elimination of the invasive plant Carpobrotus sp. From the dunes of the Natural Parc of Ebro Delta and plantation of autochthon plants in the public gardens of Poble Nou del Delta are a few examples of the work done.

During the afternoons, the volunteers have been able to enjoy lots of excursions through the delta, to observe birds and contemplate exceptional landscape. Some workshops and debates about environment have been organized and the youngsters have participated to traditional games (birles), observed an ancestral fishing technique and fabricated a basket with traditional methods. They’ve also been able to observe a bird ringing session and try a traditional transport of the Delta (perxar).

The participants were sleeping in tends, next to a colony house, near the village Poble Nou del Delta. They could enjoy swimming pool and available bikes and have tasted vegetarian and biologic dishes. Between them, they exchanged bits of culture, languages, gastronomy and ways of life … from 4 corners of Europe.
